Recreational Fishing for Mackerel

May 29, 2019 - Fisheries and Oceans Canada wishes to remind the public of the management measures in effect in the recreational mackerel fishery in the southern Gulf of St Lawrence (Mackerel Fishing Area 16).

  • The minimum length for mackerel in the commercial and recreational fisheries in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence has been changed from 26.3 cm to 26.8 cm. The size restriction was put in place in 2014 and has been increased this year for conservation purposes. Please refer to Gulf Variation order GVO-2019-031 for further details.   • Recreational mackerel fishermen are permitted to fish with up to five closely-tended rods per person. Each rod may have up to six hooks.
  • There is no limit on the number of legal-size mackerel which can be caught in the recreational fishery.
