Reminder - Marine Mammal Approach Distance

DFO reminds fish harvesters and the public of the regulation for approaching marine mammals. A minimum approach distance of 100 metres is required for most whales, dolphins and porpoises from all vessels. This amendment to the Marine Mammal Regulations came into effect in July 2018. You are also required to immediately report any accidental contact between a vessel or fishing gear and a marine mammal. Anyone who contravenes the regulations may be subject to investigation and enforcement action under the Fisheries Act. DFO recommends that all boaters become familiar with the new Marine Mammal Regulations when planning trips on the water. If you observe any incident of disturbing marine mammals, please contact the local DFO office or Crime Stoppers.
