FULL REINSTATEMENT OF AT-SEA OBSERVERS ON BOARD FISHING VESSELS

Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Newfoundland and Labrador Region informs the fishing industry that the Fisheries Management Order modifying the deployment of observers under the At-Sea Observer Program (FMO-2020-03-R) is now expired. As of today, August 13th, the deployment of observers will start again in all fisheries according to normal requirements and targets. At that time, all fishers will be expected to comply with the observer-related conditions of their fishing licences. Fishers and at-sea observer companies will also be expected to continue following provincial health guidelines for minimizing risks from COVID-19.

The Department wishes to thank all fishers, and the industry as a whole, for your cooperation over these many months in developing and implementing safe working procedures related to the virus. As a result of these efforts, the resumption of observer coverage is already underway in many commercial fisheries.

As always, the health and safety of all members of the fishing industry is our highest priority. Please reach out to the following Regional Fisheries Management Officers if you have questions or want to discuss the expiry of the Fisheries Management Order or the At-Sea Observer Program:
