Molluscan Shellfish Harvesting Closure - Significant Rainfall

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public of the closure for the harvesting of bivalve molluscan shellfish, including scallops, mussels, and clams for recreational or commercial purposes in the following areas (effective 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 11,2016):

• all waters within 3 km of the coastline and islands from Cape St. Gregory at 410361E 5471405N south and east to Cape St. Mary’s at 713791E 5189106N.

• all waters within 3 km of the coastline and islands from Little Harbour Deep Head at 534542E 5563775N east to Grates Point at 355618E 5337315N.

A storm system which passed through the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador in the past 48 hours has deposited significant amounts of rain over these sections of the island of Newfoundland. As a result, there is reason to believe that the sanitary conditions of the adjacent marine waters may have degraded to the point where accepted water quality standards have been exceeded and the contamination of the water would likely pose a risk to public health if shellfish in the affected area were harvested for consumption.

More detailed information on these closed areas can be obtained from the nearest DFO office.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Region gives notice that Prohibition Orders NSN2015-008, NSN2010-003, NSN2016-010, NSN2010-006, NSN2015-009, NSN2016-015, NSN2016-012 and NSN2016-011 have been revoked and Prohibition Orders NSN2016-016, NSN2016-017, NSN2016-018, NSN2016-019, NSN2016-020, NSN2016-021, NSN2016-022 and NSN2016-023 come into effect at 1800 hours on October 11, 2016.

In accordance with Appendix VIII of the CSSP Manual of Operations, these areas must remain closed for a minimum of seven days. There will be a Public Notice when the closure is lifted.
