MACKEREL FIXED GEAR FISHERY OPENING IN WESTERN NL AREAS

DFO advises that the Mackerel fixed gear fishery (gillnet, trap, handlines, mechanical jigger, and bar seine, including tuck seine) for vessels less than 19.8 metres in Mackerel Fishing Areas 12, 13, and 14, will open at 0600 hours on August 1, 2019.

For 2019, the minimum fish size for commercial mackerel retention is 268 mm as determined by the new stock assessment. Information regarding the Atlantic Mackerel Management Measures for 2019 can be found here: https://www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/fisheries-peches/decisions/fm-2019-gp/atl-16-eng.html

Fish harvesters based in Fishing Area 13 are reminded that, for the protection of migrating salmon, the inner portion of the Bay of Islands remains closed.

All fish harvesters are reminded that in line with the dockside monitoring requirements for this fishery, all fish product must be weighed off at point of landing.

Licence conditions can be obtained through DFO's National On-line Licencing System.

The Regional Director General, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Variation Order 2018-408 has been revoked and Variation Order 2019-180 comes into effect on July 30, 2019.
