Amendment to pn.16.029 Molluscan Shellfish Harvesting Closure in Notre Dame Bay

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public of the closure for the harvesting of bivalve molluscan shellfish, including scallops, mussels, and clams for recreational or commercial purposes in the following area of Notre Dame Bay (effective Wednesday, August 31,2016 at 2000 hours):

- all waters within 3 km of the coastline and islands from Western Head at 627350E 5488980N (UTM zone 21, NAD83) east to a point near Cape Freels at 317550E 5461710N (UTM Zone 22, NAD83). This includes classified waters in: Fortune Harbour, Thwart Island, Reach Run, Coal All Island, Goshens Arm, Burnt Arm and Upper Gut Arm.

A storm system which passed through the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador in the past 48 hours has deposited significant amounts of rain over the eastern section of Notre Dame Bay.

As a result, there is reason to believe that the sanitary conditions of the adjacent marine waters may have degraded to the point where accepted water quality standards have been exceeded and the contamination of the water would likely pose a risk to public health if shellfish in the affected area were harvested for consumption. More detailed information on these closed areas can be obtained from the nearest DFO office.

Newfoundland and Labrador Regions gives notice that Prohibition Order NSN2016-007 has been revoked and Prohibition Order NSN2016-008 comes into effect on August 31, 2016 at 2000 hours.
